Ever wondered what portions are there in your food? Serious hunger level with 22 percent of its population undernourished on Global Hunger Index Pakistan is conveniently shrugging off the fact that the food quality is getting queer every day. There is ignored debate about the Genetically Modified food which is not being emphasized by anyone in this country is now taking roots, that it will lead us to the absolute point of no return.
The genetic changes begin to sprout throughout the country. Prematurity, weak eyesight, growth issues in the younger generation are spreading out like plague without getting any prominence.
Pakistan is an agricultural based country with more than 47% of its population dependent on agriculture, Pakistan whereas is also an agriculture supplier. But over a few years, Pakistan is facing some serious inducement. To hoist these challenges GM technique has been used, but there is a lot of disputation regarding GM food.
Only approved GM food in Pakistan is Bt cotton. Genetically modified foods are genetically engineered and altered. The changes are made in their early DNA to modify food using the methods of genetic engineering.
The first ever genetically modified fruit was tomato which was genetically altered to make it immune against diseases and to enhance its shelf life. After that, a lot of other foods are modified to increase their quality. GM food can contain a gene that has been artificially inserted instead of plant acquiring it through pollination.
In Pakistan, only Bt cotton is genetically modified and it adds $2.5 billion to the national economy. The main benefits of GM foods are decreased use of pesticides, more income, less deforestation, a decrease in global warming and insect resistance. GM food gets more shelf life, the crops show better results and most importantly the prices get low.
The main positive environmental impacts of GM food are alleviating hunger and malnutrition around the world. Soil salinity has become a major problem in all agriculture which has made crops less able to grow. But everything which has great effects on diversity also shows some serious risks. GM foods cause some serious allergic reactions, less effective antibiotics and higher risks of toxicity.
GM foods are not 100% environment-friendly, endangering many species of extinction. In Pakistan the seed amendment bill 2015 stated that the government has not given a go on GM cotton seeds production, the only question which surfaced after this bill was if not government then who passed the order to produce GM seeds. Because the multinational companies claim that they have received a formal permission and licenses from the ministry of climate change, but the government denied that they have given any orders.
In such situation, Pakistan should fortify strong scientific capacity and research-based approach in GM technique. Pakistan environmental protection Agency should fully look over and equip their power to grow emerging technology (biotechnology). Pakistan should concentrate on synthetic biology as an alternative to Biotechnology techniques as is possess less risk. The last but important thing is to walk over unlicensed companies to prevent further illegal production.
