Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday the escalation of violence in protests against the government is becoming more serious.
Lam was speaking in public for the first time.
Carrie Lam said, she was confident the government could handle the unrest and she would not help dialogue between the government and the protestors.
Demonstrations have evolved over four months into a broad demand for greater democracy under the one country, two systems formula.
Police fired water cannon and opened tear gas on protesters in running battles.
Protestors threw bricks and petrol bombs on the police.
Reports said, violence is pushing Hong Kong to the brink of great danger.
Hong Kong is grappling with the biggest political crisis since its handover to Beijing in 1997.
Many Hong Kong residents believe Beijing is eroding the city’s autonomy and their rights.
