Iran said the United States abandoned the route to peace by sanctioning against Iran’s supreme leader and foreign minister.
U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing sanctions against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Monday.
The move came after Iran shot down a U.S. drone last week and Trump called off a retaliatory air strike.
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani described the U.S. moves as desperate and said sanctions against Khamenei would have no practical impact because the cleric has no assets abroad.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said imposing useless sanctions is the permanent closure of the path of diplomacy.
Trump’s National Security Adviser, John Bolton, said, the president has held the door open to real negotiations to eliminate Iran’s nuclear weapons programme, its pursuit of ballistic missile delivery systems and support for international terrorism.
U.S. disarmament ambassador Robert Wood said, Tehran would be making a mistake if it interprets the U.S. restraint over the downing of a drone as weakness.
