The diplomatic row erupted on Twitter over the ongoing peace talks between Washington and the Taliban in Afghanistan.
The growing tensions can further disturb the delicate balance in the region as the U.S. steps up a push to fight Islamic militancy.
The Twitter row began after Prime Minister Imran Khan suggested an interim government in Afghanistan to help the negotiations in the 17 years war.
The U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan John Bass rebuked Imran Khan in a Tweet drawing attention to numerous cheating scandals involving Pakistani players.
He said, some aspects of cricket apply well in diplomacy, some do not. He also said not to interfere in the internal matters of Afghanistan.
Pakistan Foreign Office said the prime minister’s comments had been reported out of context.
