Pope Francis paid tribute to journalists killed while carrying out their work with courage and dedication.
He met Italian Foreign Press Association and other journalists at Clementine Hall at the Vatican on Saturday.
He said, let’s not forget that one of the first things dictatorships do is remove freedom of the press or mask it, not leaving it free.
In an address to the journalists, he urged them to shun fake news and continue reporting on the plight of people.
He said, media freedom is important and needed to save suffering humanity and to report on what is happening in wars and other dramatic situations.
He said, freedom of the press and of expression is an important indicator of the state of a country’s health.
Talking to the journalists he said, he listened in pain to the statistics about the journalists killed while carrying out their work with courage in so many countries.
He said, we need journalists who are on the side of victims, on the side of those who are persecuted, cast aside, discriminated against.
