Mumbai software engineer, Hamid Nihal Ansari, arrested in 2012 for illegally entering Pakistan from Afghanistan, returned to India on Tuesday after six years in Pakistan and met Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.
He was arrested as he entered Pakistan illegally from Afghanistan to meet a girl he had befriended online. He was detained by intelligence agencies and local police in Kohat.
His jail term ended on Dec. 15 after completing three years.
Ansari,accompanied by his mother and other family members, met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and thanked her and the ministry for persisting with the case and taking it up with Islamabad which resulted in his release from Peshawar Central Jail.
The Pakistani authorities took a sympathetic view of the case which was welcomed by India as a matter of “great relief.”
Indian authorities also said, Pakistan should take action to end the misery of other Indian nationals and fishermen who have completed their sentences but continue to languish in Pakistan jails.
