The Pakistani government has sought extradition of its former ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani based in Washington.
The allegations of embezzlement have been levelled against Haqqani, who served as ambassador from 2008 to 2011 in the U.S.
Haqqani was removed from office for his alleged role in the “Memogate” case.
In January 2018 the Memogate case was reopened based on a
petition filed by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and several others demanding
Haqqani be produced before the Supreme Court.
The Federal Investigation Agency registered an embezzlement case of $2 million against the former ambassador expecting that a criminal charge would result in Interpol acting against Haqqani.
However, the Interpol turned down the FIA request to issue arrest warrants for Haqqani.
