California Governor Gavin Newsom apologized to Native Americans for violence and wrongdoings they suffered.
In an executive order he called for the creation of a Truth and Healing Council to produce a report before the end of 2024 on the maltreatment and violence against Native Americans.
Newsom delivered the apology during an appearance with native American leaders at the California Indian Heritage Center.
Tribal leaders thanked him for the apology. San Diego County Chairwoman Erica Pinto said, it’s healing to hear the words, but actions will speak for themselves.
The state of California never previously formally apologized for its role in wrongdoing against Native Americans.
The U.S. Congress passed a resolution in 2009 that apologized to Native Americans for violence.
