The British Navy will dispatch 100 Royal Marines to the Gulf to guard British ships.
Amid flaring tensions with the isolationist state Iran raising the threat of war British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt warned there would be “unintended but catastrophic” consequences if Iran was proven to be behind attacks.
The United States blamed Iran for the twin attacks on two oil tankers on Thursday.
U.S. President Donald Trump said the oil tanker attacks had Iran “written all over it”.
The soldiers will leave to form Special Purpose Task Group 19 deploying on Royal Navy ships.
The Marines will protect against small vessels, mines and naval missiles.
Britain has backed the United States in blaming Iran for the tanker attacks.
Tehran denies the allegation.
